In a recent announcement, CBS News revealed that Ingrid Ciprian-Matthews, a 30-year veteran of the network, has been named President of CBS News. With this new role, Ciprian-Matthews will have top editorial oversight for CBS News across all platforms, including CBS News Radio, programs, bureaus, global newsgathering, streaming, and digital editorial. She will also be responsible for standards and practices, special events, politics, elections and surveys, social, and the race and culture unit.

Ciprian-Matthews has held various leadership positions at CBS News throughout her career. She served as the Senior VP of News Administration from 2015 to 2018 and as the VP of News from 2011 to 2015.[0] Prior to that, she worked as the CBS News Foreign Editor, Senior Broadcast Producer for the “CBS Evening News,” and Senior Producer for CBS News' foreign coverage.[1] In 1993, she became a Senior Producer at CBS News, responsible for producing live segments for the morning news.[1]

CBS stated that Ciprian-Matthews will oversee all aspects of CBS News, including programs, bureaus, global newsgathering, streaming and digital editorial, standards and practices, special events, politics, elections and surveys, social, the race and culture unit, and CBS News Radio.[2]

This announcement comes after Wendy McMahon was promoted to President/CEO of CBS News and Stations and CBS Media Ventures.[3] With McMahon's new role, Ciprian-Matthews will now have top editorial oversight for the entire CBS News unit.

In other news, a recent study revealed that vaping CBD, a component of marijuana, has become significant among e-cigarette users, particularly among students. The study, conducted as part of the 2022 National Youth Tobacco Survey, found that more than 1 in 5 students who use electronic cigarettes reported vaping CBD. Additionally, over 6% of students were unsure whether or not they had vaped CBD.[4]

The researchers took a nationally representative sample of around 28,000 American students from the Youth Tobacco Survey, which was conducted from January to May 2022.[4] Of the reported active e-cigarette users, 21.3% said they had vaped CBD, and 6.3% were uncertain about their CBD vaping habits.[4]

The study also found a positive link between vaping frequency and duration with current vaping of CBD.[5] Notably, the perception of tobacco danger increased vaping CBD, especially among non-e-cigarette users. The researchers suggest that educating adolescents about the adverse health effects of vaping CBD could help decrease its use among youths.[5]

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a compound found in cannabis and hemp.[6] It is gaining popularity for its potential therapeutic properties and is commonly used in products like creams and sprays. While CBD is believed to be non-psychoactive and does not cause a “high” like THC, there are still safety concerns associated with its use, including potential harm to the lungs, liver, and male reproductive system.

Despite these concerns, CBD has emerged as a popular natural alternative for health and wellness.[6] The rise in CBD's popularity is attributed to its potential benefits and the increasing availability of THC-free CBD products.[7]

In other news, Neeraj Khemlani, the co-president of CBS News, is leaving the network.[8] Khemlani's departure comes after a two-year cost-cutting reign marked by clashes with high-profile anchors and HR complaints. Wendy McMahon, Khemlani's co-president, is expected to take over his responsibilities for running the News division.[8]

Khemlani's departure follows a “360 performance review” conducted by CBS, which focused on how he interacts with women and employees of color.[8] The review began in 2022 and has led to various changes within the network's leadership.[9]

Ingrid Ciprian-Matthews, the newly appointed President of CBS News, is an Emmy Award-winning journalist with a distinguished career at CBS News.[1] She has received several awards for her work, including an Alfred I. duPont Award for CBS News' coverage of the Newtown tragedy and an Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence for CBS News.[0] She has also been recognized by the National Association of Hispanic Journalists with the Presidential Award of Impact.[1]

In conclusion, CBS News has undergone significant changes with the appointment of Ingrid Ciprian-Matthews as President and the departure of Neeraj Khemlani. These developments come amidst the increasing prevalence of CBD vaping among students and the growing popularity of CBD as a natural alternative for health and wellness. As CBS News moves forward under new leadership, it will be interesting to see how these trends and challenges are addressed.
