The prevalence of vaping CBD among e-cigarette users, especially students, is a significant concern, according to the results of the 2022 National Youth Tobacco Survey. The survey found that more than 1 in 5 students who use electronic cigarettes reported vaping CBD, a component of marijuana that does not have the psychoactive effects of THC. Additionally, more than 6% of students were unsure if they had vaped CBD or not.[0]

The study, which involved a nationally representative sample of around 28,000 American students, discovered that out of the 2,448 reported active e-cigarette users, 21.3% said they had vaped CBD, and 6.3% were uncertain about their CBD usage. These findings highlight the need for awareness and education about the risks associated with vaping CBD.

Dr. Diane Tanaka, the medical director of the Teenage and Young Adult Health Center at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, emphasized the under-recognition of the risks of vaping CBD or cannabis among young people.[0] She stated that many young individuals are not fully aware of the potential dangers involved.

The risks associated with vaping CBD can stem from both the act of vaping itself and the marijuana component. It is important to note that the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) considers delta-8 THC, which is synthesized from CBD, to be federally illegal. This was confirmed in a letter written in 2021 by the DEA's Drug & Chemical Evaluation Section Chief Terrence Boos. The letter states that delta-8 THC synthesized from hemp-derived CBD is illegal.

The FDA's current regulatory authority over CBD products has also been a topic of discussion.[1] There is a request for information regarding the regulation of cannabidiol products, and the FDA is being urged to consider rules for all hemp-derived cannabinoids, including delta-8 THC.[2]

Cannabidiol, or CBD, has gained popularity in recent years for its potential therapeutic properties.[3] It is a compound found in cannabis and hemp that does not cause a “high” like THC. CBD products, such as creams and sprays, are often used topically to manage various conditions.[4] However, there is still much that is unknown about CBD, including its long-term effects and how different modes of use, such as smoking, vaping, eating, and applying to the skin, can affect a person.[5]

The increase in cannabis vaping among adolescents in the U.S. has raised concerns among health experts. The availability, convenience, and discreetness of vaping devices have contributed to this rise in popularity, with twelfth-grade students reporting the highest prevalence of cannabis vaping.[6]

The safety concerns surrounding CBD use include potential harm to the liver, lungs, and male reproductive system.[6] Therefore, it is crucial to determine the prevalence of vaping CBD among youths and understand the potential health consequences.

Educational campaigns, interventions, and public policy changes are necessary to reduce the harmful health outcomes associated with vaping CBD among young individuals. Awareness about the risks and potential dangers of vaping CBD needs to be raised to protect the well-being of adolescents.[7]

In conclusion, the prevalence of vaping CBD among e-cigarette users, particularly students, is a significant issue. The lack of awareness about the risks among young individuals highlights the need for education and intervention.[0] The legality of delta-8 THC synthesized from CBD is also a concern, and the FDA's regulatory authority over CBD products is being questioned. Overall, it is crucial to prioritize the health and well-being of young individuals and address the potential dangers associated with vaping CBD.[0]
